About Lake of the Prairies Regional Park

Located on the eastern shore of Lake of the Prairies in southwestern Saskatchewan, Lake of the Prairies Regional Park is a popular outdoor destination that provides visitors with both water-based and land-based recreation in a rural prairie environment. The park surrounds a large reservoir formed by the Grande Coulee Dam, which impounds the Souris River, creating a substantial lake that attracts anglers, boaters, and swimmers throughout the summer months. The landscape features open prairie, mixed grasslands, and patches of parkland trees, supporting wildlife such as waterfowl, white-tailed deer, and small mammals. The park's history is closely connected to the development of the Grande Coulee Dam in the mid-20th century, which was built to regulate water flow and support irrigation and flood control in the region. The regional park offers modern camping facilities, picnic areas, boat launches, and designated beaches, making it a favored spot for family outings and outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors can explore nearby trails suitable for hiking and mountain biking or fish from shore and boats for species like walleye, perch, northern pike, and bass. The park is accessible year-round, offering ice fishing and snowmobiling opportunities during winter months. Its combination of prairie scenery, accessible amenities, and the extensive lake area makes Lake of the Prairies Regional Park a versatile destination for recreation and nature appreciation in the Canadian prairies.
